Record Five Football NSW clubs into Round of 16

09.08.2017

In a first for the Westfield FFA Cup competition since its introduction into the Australian football scene in 2014, an amazing five teams hailing from Football NSW will compete in the Round of 16 after Sydney United 58 completed the sweep with a resounding 7-2 thrashing of the FNQ Heat on Wednesday evening.

With the likes of fellow PlayStation4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s clubs APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Blacktown City FC, Hakoah Sydney City East and PlayStation4 National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Men’s outfit Bankstown Berries all winning its opening Round of 32 matches, United 58 who had new coach Tomi Vidovic at the helm, were simply a class above their Queensland opponents at Sydney United Sports Centre.

The visitors took a shock lead in the 23rd minute when Jamie Carroll struck after a lapse by United 58 keeper Tom Manos but it was to be Heat coach’s Timothy Campbell’s only highlight as the Reds ran in a rampant seven successive goals kick started by Glen Trifiro with a thunderous drive outside the box.

Matthew Sim soon followed in the 32nd minute before Japanese import Yutaro Shin added a third a minute after the restart with a kamikaze header.

The home fans didn’t wait long for the next as a minute later Chris Payne struck after a well worked goal via a marauding run by Yianni Fragogiannis gave the former NSL giants a commanding 4-1 lead.

The club’s top goalscorer Panny Nikas then characteristically got in on the act in the 58th minute after winning a clever penalty before delivering a cheeky Panenka that deceived Heat keeper Joshua Wilson to make it five.

Shin then added the sixth and his second of the game in the 70th minute before substitute Adrian Vranic completed the rout in style with a belter in the 82nd minute as the fans celebrated to the tune of Samba De Janeiro.

There was one consolation for the away side as Charlie Beverly scored from the spot but it was a case of too little too late as Sydney United 58 ran out comfortable 7-2 winners over the Heat.

It was just what the Reds needed after being bundled out of this year’s Finals Series race with their devastating 3-2 loss to Manly United in round 21 that all but ended the club’s top five hopes.

Fragogiannis stood out alongside Shin who was devastating while club captain Nick Stavroulakis commanded his troops well with a dominant display in the guts of the midfield aided by Trifiro and Nikas as well as Michael Neill who was superb in the club’s backline.
